Fiberglass RC Airplanes

November 16th, 2007 No comments

This is really the grand-daddy of moulded plastic systems in fiberglass rc airplanes regime. Polyester and epoxy resins have been handy for many years and these have been used in amalgam with glass chopped fiber mat or woven cloth, either to cover and gain strength to a component, or to be used for moulding details such as engine cowlings and wheel spats and fiberglass rc airplanes. Strengh for weight is good with GRP mouldings and is made even better when local addition of carbon-fibre rovings or cloth is introduced. Moulding a fiberglass rc airplanes can follow two routes. The shape can be cut from foam, filled with plaster, or similar filler, smoothed down, treated with a releasing agent and then coated with the resin and glass cloth or mat. This method has disadvantages, however, in that it leaves the smooth surface on the inside and not on the outside and has to be filled, filed and sanded to a smooth finish

How to make a mould for a Fiberglass RC Airplanes.

Although this is acceptable for one-off moulded subjects, a more certain system is to make a wooden plug of the shape of the subject to be modelled, get a finish to the standard you require for the finished moulding, treat it with a PVA releasing agent and plenty of coats of resin and glass mat to produce a rigid female mould. Depending on the shape of the subject it may be necessary to split the mould into sections so that the final moulding can be released. When fiberglass rc airplanes sets, the female parts are released from the wooden plug and cleaned; they are then ready for forming the final mouldings. A good waxing and polishing follows, making certain that they will come out of the moulds cleanly. Using glass surface tissue, resin and layers of glass cloth or chopped mat, the moulding is developed to the strength and thickness required before it is left to set and then removed from the moulds. This method obviously has the advantage of providing repeatability – the moulds, carefully looked after, should last for extensive moulding sessions.
Below is a great example of how Fibreglass rc airplanes have progressed

Just prior to the outbreak of American involvement in World War II, the U.S. Navy, having heard reports of a superb fighter produced by the Japanese, realized that the current Navy fighters, the F4F Wildcat and theF2A Buffalo, were close to, if not already, obsolete. Grumman Aircraft won a contract to produce a fighter that would match the performance of the fighters produced by the Axis powers. The F6F was the result. By January 1943 the Navy was receiving a steady supply of Hellcats, quickly proving the design while pressing the airplanes into service fighting the many sea battles of the Pacific. Although unable the match the Zero’s turning abilities, the Hellcat pilots learned to use the airplane’s greater horsepower, speed, and firepower to win air battles.

S107 RC Helicopter

Original design by F3A World Champion Christophe Paysant-Le-Roux is simply beyond the ordinary. Solid, with an aspect ratio holding a large front-end radius, the full-span ailerons approach giant proportions to make up almost 1/3 of the wing cord on the short main wings. The rudder forms most of the vertical tail wing, minus a vertical fin. The horizontal tail wing area is so large, it makes up most of the horizontal tail wing area. High fuselage sideboards are also a feature.

Those who understand aerodynamics will understand the results of these special design features. Plus a colourful trim scheme on clear film – a Paysant-Le-Roux original – will flash its bold bright colours across the sky.

FEATURES

Designed for extreme 3D freestyle flight.
Using an unprecedented full-flying rudder, the large area control surfaces allow aggressive acrobatic control.
Engines with fuel pumps allow the fuel tank to be positioned close to the C of G, normal engines with self-contained two-way fuel flow sit the tank in the nose section.
All-balsa structure is fully “”framed-up”" and factory covered.
Fuselage is light weight truss structure.
Lightweight but designed for large displacement engines, and a throttle control to please confident and experienced aerial thrill seekers.
Thick, balsa rib main wing maintains strength with minimal planking for weight reduction.
Stall control is made easier with larger front end radius.
Before committing to a torque-roll, even if falling away, the ease of recovery is amazing.
When other airplanes would drift, the rudder holds the Flip 3D true.
Moving from a slow knife edge to a torque roll is possible with the wide scope of control available.
Elevator and Rudder servo linkages are designed to run close to the fuselage walls for ease and efficiency.
